Farewell to Miguel Gandara

Brunch at Kitchen 64

March 27, 2022

After Mass on Sunday, March 27th, Rita's Bible Study Group had a wonderful brunch at Kitchen 64.  The brunch was in honor of parishioner, Miguel Gandara.

Miguel had discovered St. Elizabeth when he came to Richmond for work.  He now has to return to his home in Texas.  At the end of Mass, he personally thanked St. Elizabeth for welcoming him into the parish.

Best of luck, Miguel!

Fr. Jim's Jots - Third Sunday of Lent - March 20, 2022

 Third Sunday of Lent

March 20, 2022

Fr. Jim's Jots

Greetings!

Wow! Can you believe Lent is half over!  The time flies by and I am sure looking forward to Spring and Easter and I hope you are too.  I hope you will attend our Parish Retreat on Saturday, March 26th!  Even if  you don't attend the retreat, I want to invite you to attend the reconciliation service at 12 noon on Saturday March 26th.  We will have several priests to hear confessions.  The reconciliation service is a simple act, but so important during Lent.

Let's review:

~ Opening prayer

~ Reading from Sacred Scripture

~ Examination of conscience

~ The prayer, An Act of Contrition:

"O my God, I am sorry for having offended You.  I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell.  But most of all, because they offend You, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my Love.  I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin.  Amen."

Individual confession with a priest and the priest will give a penance and offer the prayer of absolution.  This is just one example of an Act of Contrition you may have learned a different one or perhaps now is the time to learn one or help children learn this prayer.  It is my prayer that you attend the reconciliation service and may all of us prepare to celebrate the Easter Sacraments.  Also just a gentle reminder the Church asks us to celebrate the Sacrament of Confession during the Advent and Lenten season.

+Blessings +

Lenten Blessings!

Prayer, fasting and alms giving:  Please join us for Mass on Sunday 9:00 a.m. or 11:15 a.m.  It is safe to attend and I sure would like to see a few more folks at the 11:15 a.m. Mass.  We also have Mass at noon on Wednesdays and Fridays, so join us during Lent to have this season be a spiritual renewal.  Stations of the Cross are on Fridays at 6:00 p.m.  And don't forget to sign up to join us for our Lenten retreat - the theme is "Remember the Rock" and will be on Saturday, March 26th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Breakfast and lunch are provided.  We will also have several priests here on March 26th for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) at 12 noon on March 26th.  You don't need to attend the retreat to participate in the noon reconciliation service.

Remember that on Fridays during Lent, we as Roman Catholics abstain from meat.  What a helpful and important way to remember the Lord's Passion on Fridays, keeping in mind our own cross and being in communion with Our Lord's suffering.  May this simple act of abstaining from meat on Friday remind us to turn to the Lord.

We need to also practice alms giving.  Special thanks to all who took a "Rice Bowl" to help the poor.  Let us continue to pray and think about the Richmond Diocesan Appeal; our goal this year is $16,500.  Please help us meet our goal and make a gift to the Annual Richmond Appeal.  We need your help!

+ Blessings +

Fr. Jim's Jots - First Sunday of Lent - March 6, 2022

 First Sunday of Lent

March 6, 2022

FR. JIM'S JOTS

IT'S LENT!  When Ash Wednesday rolls around each year, it can catch us off guard when it comes to our prayer life.  We know Lent is important and that it helps us prepare for Easter.  Most Catholics recognize Lent as a solemn period of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  As such, during Lent we might feel the need to "up our game" when it comes to prayer.  Here at Saint Elizabeth, we can help with that!

~ Attend weekday Mass on Wednesdays and Fridays at noon

~ Attend the Rosary on Zoom (link on our website)

~ Join us for Stations of the Cross in person or on Zoom Fridays at 6 p.m.

~ Spend time each day reading the scriptures

~ Attend our parish retreat on Saturday, March 26th

~ Attend our Penance Service at noon on March 26th

Before you know it, Lent will be over and we will be in Holy Week/Easter, so plan your schedule and make this year different!

"God, may your light guide my day, and your Spirit bring me Peace. Amen."

+Blessings for the New Year +
