FR. JIM'S JOTS - Third Sunday of Easter - April 23, 2023

 Third Sunday of Easter

April 23, 2023

FATHER JIM'S JOTS

Greetings!

Spring has sprung!!  We need your help to be on a team to mow the parish lawn grass once a month.  We have been blessed to have volunteers and are in need of a few more helpers.

Special thanks to Eddie Gorman, who has been doing this volunteer work for several years, and David Woodburn, who has offered to help with the scheduling of a few teams.  Thank you as well to Fabrice Niyitanga and Abedi Shishi who have volunteered to help.

Please, can you help by volunteering?  If interested, please email David Woodburn at dwoodburn@stelizcc.org.

Prayers and moments of silence are good but NOT enough.  Last Sunday, April 16th was the 16th Anniversary of the tragic shooting at VA Tech.  The deaths with guns have gotten much worse in the last 16 years.  It seems daily we read and hear about shootings with multiple victims.  Enough!

I am asking the Social Justice Committee to put this on their agenda and see how we as a parish can be more proactive, involved and active in the fight for an end to gun violence and killings.  As a church, we are Pro-Life; being for sensible gun legislation is a pro-life issue.

We should work to:

- Implement RED Flag laws

- Register all guns

- Ban assault weapons like AR-15s

I invite you to join me and our Social Justice Committee to work on this issue.  We are the majority and for too long the NRA has been too vocal and uses their deep pockets to influence Congress.  It's time to take a stand.  Vote and put our thoughts and prayers into ACTION!

Blessings and Peace,

Fr. Jim

Fr. Jim's Jots - Second Sunday of Easter - Divine Mercy Sunday - April 16, 2023

Second Sunday of Easter

Divine Mercy Sunday

April 16, 2923

FR. JIM'S JOTS

Greetings!

Happy Second Sunday of Easter to everyone.  Today is also known as Divine Mercy Sunday.  Did you know?

In a series of revelations to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska in the 1930's, Our Lord called for a special feast day to be celebrated on the Sunday after Easter.  Today, we know that feast as Divine Mercy Sunday, named by Pope St. John Paul II at the canonization of St. Faustina on April 30, 2000.

In all, St. Faustina recorded 14 revelations from Jesus concerning His desire for this feast.  Nevertheless, Divine Mercy Sunday is not a feast based solely on St. Faustina's revelations.  Indeed, it is not primarily about St. Faustina - nor is it altogether a new feast.  The Second Sunday of Easter was already a Solemnity as the Octave Day of Easter.  The title "Divine Mercy Sunday" does, however, highlight the meaning of the day.

Click here for a guide on how to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.  The Chaplet can be said anytime, but for each of the nine days of the novena, Our Lord gave Saint Faustina a different intention.

You, too, can make a prayer for these intentions and others, especially by praying the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy.

Easter Blessings,

Fr. Jim Arsenault, Pastor
